Phone Call Scams

IRS Scam:

Someone calling claiming to be from the IRS. The caller claims you owe back taxes and threatens to confiscate your property or issue an arrest warrant if you do not pay over the phone. This is a scam, and you should hang up. Inform your accountant or tax preparer of the call right after.

Law Enforcement Scam:

You get a call from a police officer informing you that a family member has been detained and that you must post bail. They may tell you that your loved one is ashamed and does not want other family members to know what transpired. The caller may know your family member's name and specific information about them to make you think twice. This is indeed a scam, and you should hang up immediately. Instead, call the named family member and check in with them.

Lottery Scam:

You get a call stating you have won a lottery or other prizes, such as a cruise or a trip to a tropical location. However, the caller will tell you that you must pay over the phone to cover taxes and processing fees to claim it. This is a scam, and you do not win anything you haven't previously applied for.

Immigration Scam:

You get a call from a person who claims to be with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The caller threatens to deport or imprison you if you don't pay over the phone since they claim your immigration status has been canceled. In addition, they will know your name and information about you. This is a scam. Call United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement right away.

Medical Scam:

Someone calls to inform you that a family member has been hurt in an accident and needs surgery immediately. The caller claims that the hospital won't assist unless you make a phone payment. The caller may know your family member's name and specific information about them to make you think twice. This is indeed a scam, and you should hang up immediately. Instead, call the named family member and check in with them.

Hostage Scam:

You get a call from someone asking you to make a phone-based ransom payment for a family member who is being held hostage. The caller may know your family member's name and specific information about them to make you think twice. This is indeed a scam, and you should hang up immediately. Instead, call the named family member and check in with them.
