Elder Abuse
Types of Elder Abuse:
● Neglect: Occurs when a caretaker neglects to keep an older adult safe, leading to significant illnesses or injuries.
● Physical abuse: The use of force against an older adult. It includes physically restraining, pushing, punching, or kicking.
● Sexual abuse: Any forced or non-consensual sexual contact with an elder. This includes sexual relations with elderly people who cannot agree due to dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or other cognitive impairments.
● Psychological or emotional abuse: Abuse of the mind, fear, or emotions is the deliberate infliction of mental suffering on an older adult.
● Financial abuse: The improper, unauthorized, or unlawful use of an older person's resources. It can be committed by strangers, family members, or nursing care personnel.
● Abandonment: Occurs when someone responsible for taking care of an elderly person purposefully leaves them. It is sometimes combined with neglect.
● Self-neglect: An elder engages in this when they cannot take care of their fundamental requirements and suffer as a result.
Types of Elder Abuse to Look Out for:
● Beyond physical and mental harm, many forms of elder abuse exist. Sexual assaults, financial exploitation, desertion, and other problems can affect the elderly.
● Sometimes, older adults neglect and abuse themselves.
● The majority of elder abuse is committed by family members or nursing care employees.
● Financial exploitation is more frequently self-reported by elderly people rather than physical or mental harm.
● The majority of elder abuse occurs psychologically.
