Shopping Safety
Out and About
● Packages and shopping bags shouldn't be seen through the windows of your car. If you can't take your items home immediately, lock them in the trunk.
● Avoid carrying a lot of cash. When feasible, use a debit or credit card to make payments.
● Do not let your purse hang loosely; keep it close to your body. Put your wallet inside a coat pocket or the front pocket of your pants.
● Keep your guard up and be mindful of your surroundings in stores or public places.
● Place your vehicle in a well-lit place, then lock the doors.
● Don't leave personal items unattended while you are out (purse, wallet, or keys.) Stay with your cart at all times.
● When carrying items, ensure one hand is available at all times. Hold your keys or objects to ensure you can get into your vehicle quickly.
Online Shopping & Packages
● Shop only at familiar stores, and confirm that the websites are secure according to industry standards.
● Keep your passwords safe and your confidential information private. Never provide your password or payment card details unless you are the one who demands them.
● Learn about the guidelines and regulations for online shops and auction sites.
● Alternatives are available from USPS, UPS, FedEx, and other package delivery companies if you won't be home to accept the delivery. You can also ask a neighbor or friend to pick up your packages.
● Pick up packages as soon as you can. Do not leave your packages unattended for an extended time. You can track your package to see when it will arrive. If you know you won't be home in time, contact the delivery company about picking up your package at one of their locations, or ask someone you trust to grab the package for you once it arrives.
● Wherever you have the best chance of receiving them, ship your items there. Your workplace or a friend or family member's home is always suggested if you know your item will be in safe hands and not left unattended.
● Schedule a delivery or ask for a signature. You may usually request a delivery window from many shipping companies, such as an evening or the weekend when you know you'll be home.
