Safety When Walking Alone
Since the weather has gotten warmer, more people are being drawn outdoors. You may want to walk around your neighborhood, local park, or city for some fresh air after a cold winter. Here are some safety tips to remember.
● Keep an eye out for what's going on around you. Occasionally, glance behind you. Whether you’re in your neighborhood or a busy park, that might feel safer.
● Watch out for cars driving through, especially if you aren’t on a sidewalk. Running in the opposite direction of a street can help you be more alert to cars coming by. Never have your back toward moving vehicles if you can.
● Carry pepper spray or other defensive devices.
● Signaling devices, such as whistles or hand-held alarms, should be carried.
● If you are walking at night, stay on streets that are always well-lit.
● Make sure you plan your route. Whenever possible, walk with a friend or your dog, no matter what time of day.
● Carry small amounts of cash and do not wear valuable jewelry.
● If an armed robber approaches you, don't resist. Be quick and quiet in handing over what is requested.
● If anyone offers you a ride, do not take it unless you know them personally.
